The four building blocks of every workflow
Message it from WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and more. It plans the steps and uses its tools.
Chat appsIt saves what matters to plain files such as MEMORY.md and USER.md. Just say "Remember that…"
Automations run on a timer (--cron, --every, --at), from webhooks, or as a regular heartbeat check-in.

The prompts are starting points. Adjust names, times and sources to your setup. Workflows that read email or calendars need a matching skill, plugin or integration connected first.
Walkthrough: a morning briefing in 3 steps
Tell it about you
Remember: I live in Colombo, I start work at 9, and I only want urgent emails flagged.
This is saved to its memory files, so every future briefing uses it.
Ask for the schedule
Every weekday at 7:30, send me the weather, my first meeting and any urgent emails. Keep it under 6 lines.
The agent creates the automation itself. Prefer the terminal? Here's the same job:
openclaw automations add \
--name "Morning briefing" \
--cron "30 7 * * 1-5" --tz Asia/Colombo \
--session isolated \
--message "Send my morning briefing: weather, first meeting, urgent emails. Max 6 lines." \
--announce --channel telegram --to <your-chat-id>Check it ran
openclaw automations list
openclaw automations runs <job-id>Nothing arrived? The troubleshooting guide covers scheduled jobs. Jobs only run while the gateway is on, so use a VPS or always-on machine.
Schedule builder
Turn any prompt into an automation
Pick when it runs and where the result goes. You get the command, plus a chat message that does the same thing.
Cron times use the gateway's timezone unless you add --tz. Jobs at the top of the hour may be staggered by up to 5 minutes (add --exact to prevent this). In chat, /loop 30m <prompt> makes a quick repeating job, and /loop stop ends it.
Tips for reliable workflows
- Start with one. Run a single workflow for a week before adding the next.
- Ask before acting. Tell it to show drafts and wait for approval before sending, buying or deleting.
- Use a cheaper model for routine jobs. Add
--modelto an automation, for example a Flash, Luna or Haiku model. See pricing. - Limit tools per job with
--tools, for example--tools web_searchfor a news digest. - Keep messages short. Ask for "under 6 lines" so busy days stay readable.
- Save winners as skills so they run the same way every time.
What not to automate (yet)
AI agents make mistakes and can be misled by content they read. Keep a human in the loop for anything costly or hard to undo.
- ❌ Payments, purchases or transfers without your approval
- ❌ Deleting files or emails automatically
- ❌ Sending messages as you to new people without review
- ❌ Medical, legal or financial decisions
- ❌ Acting on instructions found in emails or web pages
Set up approvals and limits with the security guide.
OpenClaw use case questions
What can I use OpenClaw for?
Common uses include daily briefings, reminders, inbox triage with drafts, research reports, travel planning, family shopping lists in group chats, server and website monitoring, and summarizing webhook events from tools like forms or CI. It works best for small, repeated jobs.
How do I schedule a task in OpenClaw?
Ask in chat, for example "Every weekday at 7:30 send me…", and the agent creates the automation. Or use openclaw automations add with --cron, --every or --at, a --message, and --announce with a channel to deliver the result.
What is the best first workflow to try?
A morning briefing. It's low risk, runs daily, and shows memory, scheduling and tools working together. Add more workflows once it runs reliably for a week.
Can OpenClaw read and reply to my email?
It can read and draft with an email skill, plugin or Gmail integration connected. For safety, have it draft replies and wait for your approval instead of sending automatically.
Do scheduled jobs run when my computer is off?
No. Automations run on the gateway, so it must be running. For 24/7 workflows, host OpenClaw on a VPS, a Mac mini or a Raspberry Pi.
How do I stop a scheduled workflow?
Ask the assistant to stop it, use /loop stop for chat loops, or list jobs with openclaw automations list and remove or edit the job by its ID.
