In practice

A normal morning with OpenClaw

Most people start with small jobs: a daily briefing, inbox cleanup, reminders. Here's what that looks like in Telegram. Each reply uses a different feature.

  • 1Automation sends a scheduled briefing
  • 2Tools read email and calendar
  • 3Memory recalls your preferences
  • 4It asks before acting

1Good morning! 7:30 briefing: 22°C and sunny, 3 meetings today, and your flight to Colombo is on time.
Anything urgent in my inbox?
22 of 41 unread need you: the landlord's lease renewal and a contract from Priya. I've drafted replies to both.

OpenClaw features, area by area

Ten areas cover almost everything OpenClaw does. Each one includes a message you could actually send.

01

Chat from the apps you already use

Message OpenClaw like a friend instead of opening another app. It works from 29 channels and keeps separate sessions per chat.

  • WhatsApp
  • Telegram
  • Slack
  • Discord
  • iMessage
  • Signal
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Google Chat
  • Matrix
  • SMS
  • WeChat
  • + more
  • Unknown senders must be approved before they can talk to it
  • Rich messages, threads and Telegram mini app support
  • Joins Discord voice channels and writes meeting notes
Try: "Summarize the last 50 messages in #marketing."

02

Take real actions

This is what separates OpenClaw from a chatbot. With your permission it uses tools on your machine and the web.

  • Browser: opens sites, clicks, fills in forms, with separate profiles
  • Code execution: runs commands and scripts, with approvals for risky ones
  • Files: reads, writes and patches files, and handles PDFs
  • Web search: Brave, DuckDuckGo, Exa, Tavily and more
  • Media: generates images, music, speech and video
Try: "Find the cheapest direct flight to Singapore next Friday and put the options in a table."

03

Remember you

OpenClaw builds long-term memory about you, your projects and your preferences, and stores it as files on your own disk.

  • Active memory with provenance, so you can see where a fact came from
  • Standing intents: lasting preferences like "always reply in British English"
  • Compaction and "dreaming" tidy memory in the background
  • Separate sessions for different people and chats
Try: "Remember that I'm vegetarian and never book me meetings before 10am."
04

Learn new skills

Skills are repeatable procedures the agent loads when needed. Install them from the community or let OpenClaw write its own.

  • ClawHub: marketplace for community skills and plugins
  • Skill Workshop: build a personal library, including skills it learns itself
  • Plugin SDK: add new channels, model providers and tools
Try: "Every time I send you a receipt photo, add it to my expenses sheet. Save that as a skill."

05

Work on its own schedule

OpenClaw is proactive. It can run jobs on a timer or react to events without you starting a chat.

  • Cron jobs and schedules for recurring tasks
  • Webhooks so other services can trigger it
  • Email (IMAP) triggers to react to new mail
  • Hooks to run your own code at key moments
Try: "Every weekday at 7:30, send me the weather, my first meeting and any overdue invoices."
Webhooks and API guide →
06

Talk, listen and see

Pair the iOS or Android app as a "node" and OpenClaw can use your phone's voice, camera, screen and location.

  • Talk mode: real-time voice conversations
  • Voice calls plugin with inbound calls and text-to-speech
  • Camera and screen capture from paired phones
  • Location commands, and HealthKit summaries on iOS
  • Canvas for visual output on companion apps
Try: "Take a photo of the whiteboard and turn it into a to-do list."
07

Run a team of agents

One gateway can host several agents, each with its own workspace, memory and rules.

  • Multi-agent routing by chat, sender or workspace
  • Sub-agents the main agent can hand work to
  • A family assistant and a work assistant on the same machine, kept apart
Try: "Ask the research agent to compare three CRMs, then write me a summary."
08

Use any AI model

OpenClaw is model-agnostic. Swap the brain without changing anything else.

  • Claude
  • OpenAI
  • Gemini
  • Ollama
  • LM Studio
  • vLLM
  • Hosted models with an API key, or local models for fully offline use
  • Adjustable thinking levels for harder problems
  • Automatic key rotation when you hit rate limits
Compare models →
09

Stay in control

You decide what it can touch, and you can see everything it does.

  • Control UI: browser dashboard for chat, settings, sessions and devices
  • WebChat and a terminal UI
  • Sandboxing with Docker, Podman, SSH or OpenShell
  • Allowlists, tool permissions and approval prompts
  • Doctor health checks, OpenTelemetry and Prometheus metrics

10

Build on it

Developers can call OpenClaw from their own apps or extend it.

  • OpenAI-compatible HTTP API for chat and responses
  • Tools invoke endpoint and WebSocket protocol
  • MIT-licensed open source you can read and change
  • Runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, Docker, Kubernetes and Raspberry Pi

Honest limits

What OpenClaw can't do (yet)

OpenClaw is powerful, but it isn't magic. Knowing its limits saves money and frustration.

  • It's only as smart as your model.A cheap or small model will make more mistakes with multi-step tasks.
  • It needs a computer that stays on.Scheduled jobs only run while the gateway is running. Use a VPS or always-on machine for 24/7 use.
  • Setup takes some effort. You'll use a terminal, connect channels and add an API key. Most people are running in under an hour.
  • It can get things wrong.Keep approvals on for sending messages, spending money or deleting files.
  • Some features need extra hardware.iMessage needs a Mac, and camera, screen and location need the phone app.
  • Model usage costs money. The software is free, but heavy use of premium models can be expensive. See pricing.
  • More access means more risk.Vet third-party skills and don't give it accounts it doesn't need.
FAQ

OpenClaw features: common questions

What can OpenClaw do?

OpenClaw is a self-hosted AI assistant that works from 29 chat apps. It can browse the web, run commands, manage files, read email and calendars, remember your preferences, run scheduled jobs, use voice and your phone's camera, and learn new skills.

Can OpenClaw control my computer?

Yes. With your permission it can run commands, read and write files and control a browser. Risky actions can require your approval, and you can run it in a sandbox to limit what it can reach.

Does OpenClaw work offline?

It can. Connect a local model through Ollama, LM Studio or vLLM and OpenClaw runs without sending your messages to a cloud AI provider. Features that need the internet, like web search, still need a connection.

Can OpenClaw message me first?

Yes. Using cron jobs, schedules, webhooks and email triggers, OpenClaw can send you briefings, reminders and alerts without you starting the conversation.

Does OpenClaw support voice?

Yes. Talk mode offers real-time voice conversations through the companion apps, a voice call plugin handles phone calls, and it can join Discord voice channels.

What are OpenClaw skills?

Skills are repeatable procedures the agent loads when it needs them. You can install community skills from ClawHub, write your own, or let OpenClaw save new skills as it learns.
