Which one wins for common workflows
Deep research, long documents and the ChatGPT for Word add-in. Polished and quick to start.
A 7:30 message with weather, meetings and urgent email, delivered in the app you already use.
Rename photos, tidy folders and run scripts locally, with approval prompts for risky commands.
ChatGPT dots work in Slack and Teams on Business Premium. OpenClaw joins Slack on any budget, self-hosted.
Run a local model so prompts and files never leave your machine.
No server, updates or security settings to manage. Just install the app.

Always-on agents and automation
This used to be OpenClaw's clearest advantage. In 2026 ChatGPT closed some of the gap:
ChatGPT gets a dedicated Scheduled page for tasks.
ChatGPT Work launches, an agent for longer, involved tasks.
Tasks can trigger on Gmail, Slack and GitHub events, but run at most once an hour. Free users get 3 active tasks.
Dots launch: always-on agents with their own cloud computer, on Pro and Business Premium.
ChatGPT's agents run on OpenAI's cloud computers within plan limits. OpenClaw runs on your own hardware, with no task caps. It can touch your local files and network, and can run any model. That's more power, and more responsibility.
Privacy and control
Chats and memory are stored by OpenAI. You can opt out of training on personal plans, and Business plans exclude your data from training by default.
Memory, files and logs stay on your machine. Each message is still sent to the model provider you choose.
Everything stays on your hardware. It's the most private option, with some trade-offs.
OpenClaw can run commands on your computer. Keep approvals on, approve unknown senders before they can talk to it, and never expose the gateway to the internet without authentication. Read the security guide.

OpenClaw vs ChatGPT questions
Is OpenClaw better than ChatGPT?
Neither is better for everyone. ChatGPT is easier and more polished for research, writing and everyday questions. OpenClaw is better if you want an assistant in your chat apps that acts on your own computer, keeps memory on your disk and works with any model.
Can OpenClaw use my ChatGPT subscription?
Yes. Run openclaw models auth login --provider openai to sign in with your ChatGPT account through Codex login. OpenClaw then uses your plan's allowance instead of a separate API key.
Is OpenClaw free?
The software is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay for hosting if you use a VPS, and for the AI model unless you use an existing plan or a free local model.
Can ChatGPT work in WhatsApp like OpenClaw?
ChatGPT left WhatsApp on January 15, 2026 after a WhatsApp policy change. OpenAI's release notes say it returned in the EEA in July 2026 through 1-800-ChatGPT. OpenClaw connects to WhatsApp as your own assistant on your own number or account.
What are ChatGPT dots, and how do they compare to OpenClaw?
Dots are always-on ChatGPT agents with their own cloud computer, launched on September 29, 2026 for Pro and Business Premium. Like OpenClaw, they keep working between conversations. Unlike OpenClaw, they run in OpenAI's cloud on OpenAI models rather than on your own hardware.
Is OpenClaw harder to use than ChatGPT?
Yes, at first. You install it, connect a model and a chat app, and look after updates and security. After that, you just message it like a contact.
