How to Use OpenClaw: Your First Workflow

In this beginner tutorial you'll install OpenClaw, connect it to Telegram and build a real workflow: a morning briefing that arrives on your phone every weekday without you asking.

Before you start

What you need

  • A computer that stays on

    Mac, Windows or Linux. Scheduled jobs only run while OpenClaw is running, so a desktop, Mac mini or VPS works best.

  • An AI model API key

    From a provider like Anthropic, OpenAI or Google, or a local model if you'd rather not pay per message.

  • Telegram on your phone

    We use Telegram because its bot setup is the simplest. You can switch to WhatsApp or another app later.

What we're building

Every weekday at 7:30, OpenClaw will send you one Telegram message with the weather, your first meetings and any emails that need a reply. Once it works, you can use the same pattern for any routine.

1
Step 1

Install OpenClaw

Run the official installer. It sets up everything and then starts the onboarding wizard.

Terminal
curl -fsSL https://openclaw.ai/install.sh | bash

Check it worked:

Terminal
openclaw --version
openclaw doctor

Prefer an app, Docker or npm? See all options on the download page.

2
Step 2

Add an AI model

The onboarding wizard asks which model provider to use and for your API key. If you skipped it, start it again:

Terminal
openclaw onboard --install-daemon

The --install-daemon flag installs OpenClaw as a background service, so it keeps running after you close the terminal. That's what lets your morning briefing arrive on time.

Confirm your model is connected:

Terminal
openclaw models status
Set a spending limit

Before going further, set a monthly budget cap in your model provider's dashboard. A daily briefing costs very little, but a mistake in a loop can add up. See OpenClaw pricing.

3
Step 3

Connect Telegram

  1. In Telegram, open a chat with @BotFather, send /newbot and follow the prompts. Copy the bot token it gives you.
  2. Give the token to OpenClaw. The onboarding wizard can do this for you, or add it to ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json:
~/.openclaw/openclaw.json (JSON5)
{
  channels: {
    telegram: {
      botToken: "PASTE_YOUR_BOT_TOKEN",
      dmPolicy: "pairing",
    },
  },
}
  1. Open your new bot in Telegram and send it any message. Because of dmPolicy: "pairing", OpenClaw holds unknown senders until you approve them, and replies with a pairing code.
  2. Approve yourself from the terminal:
Terminal
openclaw pairing list
openclaw pairing approve telegram <code>

Pairing is an important safety feature. It stops strangers who find your bot from giving your assistant orders. Full walkthrough: Telegram guide.

4
Step 4

Say hello

Send a few messages to check everything works. Each one tests something different:

Basic reply

"Hi! What can you help me with?"

Web search

"What's the weather in Colombo today?"

Files

"List the files in my Downloads folder."

If it can't reach your email or calendar yet, that's fine. Ask "What do you need to read my Gmail and Google Calendar?" and it will walk you through connecting them, or see our skills guide.

5
Step 5

Teach it about you

OpenClaw saves what you tell it to long-term memory on your computer. A few facts now make every workflow better. Send something like:

"Some things to remember: I live in Colombo, my time zone is Asia/Colombo, I work 9 to 6 on weekdays, I prefer short bullet-point summaries, and emails from my manager Priya are always high priority."

Check what it saved by asking "What do you remember about me?" You can correct or delete anything the same way.

6
Step 6

Build the workflow

Now the fun part. You don't need to write code: describe the routine in chat and OpenClaw creates a scheduled automation for you. Use the builder to write your message.

Include
Send this to your bot
Telegram message

OpenClaw will confirm the schedule. To see it from the terminal:

Terminal
openclaw automations list

Prefer the command line? Automations can also be created with openclaw automations (alias openclaw cron). Run openclaw automations --help for the options.

7
Step 7

Test and refine

Don't wait until tomorrow morning. Trigger it now:

"Run my morning briefing now so I can see what it looks like."

Then shape it with plain feedback until it's right:

  • "Make it shorter, five bullets maximum."
  • "Skip newsletters when counting emails."
  • "If it's going to rain, put that first."
  • "Move it to 7:00 on Mondays."
What a finished briefing looks like

Good morning! Tuesday, 30 September

🌦 29°C, showers after 3pm. Take an umbrella.

📅 9:30 Team stand-up · 14:00 Client call with Acme

✉️ 2 need a reply: Priya (contract, high priority), landlord (lease)

Want me to draft replies?

Troubleshooting

If something doesn't work

The bot doesn't reply in Telegram

Check the gateway is running with openclaw doctor, then run openclaw pairing list. If your chat is waiting there, approve it with openclaw pairing approve telegram <code>.

The briefing didn't arrive this morning

Your computer may have been asleep or OpenClaw wasn't running. Make sure you installed the background service with openclaw onboard --install-daemon, check the time zone in openclaw automations list, and consider an always-on machine or VPS.

It says it can't access my email or calendar

Those need a skill or plugin with permission to your accounts. Ask OpenClaw what it needs, or follow our skills guide. Only grant the access the workflow requires.

Replies are slow or low quality

Multi-step tasks work best with a capable model. Check which model you're using with openclaw models status and see our models guide.

What's next

Your next workflows

You've learned the pattern: teach it a fact, describe a routine, test it, refine it. Try one of these next.

Inbox triage

"Every hour from 9 to 6, tell me only about emails from clients."

Weekly review

"Every Friday at 5pm, summarize what I did this week from my calendar."

Bill reminders

"Two days before any bill in my inbox is due, remind me."

Smart home

"At sunset, turn on the living room lights." More ideas
